Athens

Athens is the capital city of Greece and it has and always will be a very popular holiday destination. The birthplace of democracy and the western world, Athens is one of the most important and historic cities in the world, and has so much to offer visitors. With a fantastic public transport system that includes the bus, trolley, Metro and Tram, it has never been so easy to travel around the city and explore everything that is has to offer.

There are so many beautiful places to see in Athens, and the many archaeological sites and fantastic museums make it an ideal destination for those who love history and culture. It is a very vibrant and exciting city, where you can find lots of great entertainment, as well as places to enjoy delicious food.

The most famous site is the Parthenon and Acropolis of Athens, where you can experience this stunning ancient structure as well as enjoy some wonderful panoramic views over the entire city. Under the Acropolis are lots of other wonderful places to visit, and as you visit the various ancient sites, you can stop for a drink or a bite to eat in the Plaka and Monastiraki districts.

For those who love the beach, there are lots of great beaches you can find along the southern coast, starting in the area of Palaio Faliro and following the coast all the way south to locations such as Voula and Varkiza. You can also jump on a ferry boat and spend the day on one of the beautiful islands of the Saronic Gulf. Aegina island is just an hour’s journey by ferry boat from the Athens port of Piraeus.

Mainland Greece

The Greek mainland is a beautiful destination for holidays and travel throughout the year. It is a mountainous area and the landscapes and scenery you will find here are absolutely unique and inspiring. The mainland is full of perfect places to visit and has lots to offer visitors.

The Peloponnese in the south of Greece is always a popular choice with travellers. With its stunning beaches, and interesting archaeological sites, such as Ancient Olympia and Epidaurus, one can easily combine education and entertainment into their holiday. There are lots of great locations in the Peloponnese that you can visit and experience. The area is also perfect for those who enjoy outdoor activities and want to enjoy Greece throughout the year, and not just during the summer.

Central Greece is one of the upcoming holiday destinations, and the number of visitors to this region has steadily increased over the past years. Free from the problems of mass-tourism, there are many regions in Central Greece where visitors can enjoy quiet, peaceful and unspoilt holidays. Along the eastern and southern coasts are lots of charming beach resorts and destinations where you can enjoy holidays by the sea.

The region of Thessaly on the eastern side of the mainland is another that has been blessed with immense natural beauty, and there are various places here that you can enjoy all year round. In the north of Greece is the Macedonia region which is home to the city of Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, as well as a whole range of lovely travel destinations including the majestic Chalkidiki peninsula, Kavala, Serres and lots of other places. Over to the east of Macedonia is the region of Thrace, another very beautiful part of the country, with a lovely coastline and beautiful backdrop of mountains. Greek Islands

As always, the Greek islands will be the holiday destination of many and with their unique charm and beauty, it is hard to argue with this choice. Islands such as Mykonos, Rhodes, Santorini and Corfu are the Greek islands that everyone knows of, but with so many smaller undiscovered islands, one may decide to venture out, and be a little more adventurous when selecting the island they wish to visit.

The Cyclades islands is the biggest island group in Greece and is located in the heart of the Aegean sea. It is home to some of the most famous of all Greek islands, and attracts visitors each year from all corners of the world. The island of Santorini is probably the most famous of the Cyclades islands, and this is a place that huge numbers will visit each year. The unique landscape formed by the volcanic eruptions thousands of years back has left its mark on the island and today the caldera is a one of the highlights of a trip to Santorini.

Mykonos is another of the most popular islands where you can find some beautiful beaches, picturesque scenery and lots of places for entertainment during the night and early hours. Some of the other popular islands in the Cyclades include Naxos, Paros, Ios and Amorgos.

To the east of the Cyclades are the Dodecanese islands, another beautiful collection of travel destinations that offer lots of places for visitors to experience. The Dodecanese are a little more peaceful and offer some very nice locations where you can simply relax and enjoy the peace.

The island of Rhodes is the largest in the Dodecanese and attracts huge numbers of visitors from all over the world who come to enjoy the stunning coastal resorts, the sandy beaches and the history and culture that flourishes on the island.

Some of the other popular islands in the Dodecanese include Karpathos, Patmos, Kalymnos and Kos. Some of the islands are very small and peaceful, and perfect for escaping from the noise and crowds of some of the more popular destinations.

Above the Dodecanese are the North Aegean Islands, which are located close to the coast of Turkey. These islands are very beautiful and provide a very relaxing setting for your holidays in the Aegean.

The islands of Lesvos, Ikaria, Samos and Thassos are the most well known islands here, though there are several other smaller islands such as Oinousses and Psara which are very traditional and authentic islands.

Over on the west of the Aegean are the beautiful Sporades islands, a small chain of islands that are extremely beautiful with lots of rich vegetation and forests, with olive groves stretching all the way down to the beaches.

Skiathos and Skopelos are the two most popular islands in the group, though the other islands of Alonissos and Skyros are also places of exceptional natural beauty, with each being a wonderful destination for your holidays to Greece.

Across on the west side of Greece in the Ionian sea are the Ionian islands, which are a much loved holiday destination for many travelers. The appearance and style of these islands is much different to those in the Aegean, and they are a great place to visit.

Corfu is the most famous of the Ionian islands, though the others of Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos are also very well known, and each has a large number of visitors coming from around the world to enjoy the spectacular blue and turquoise seas and the soft sandy beaches.

Close to the city of Athens are the Saronic Gulf islands, a small gathering of islands that include Aegina, Hydra and Poros. These are very beautiful islands and are perfect for those who are visiting Athens and wish to take in a Greek island.

With a short ferry journey time of just a couple of hours, you can escape from the city and head over on a relaxing ferry ride to one of the islands where you can swim, explore or enjoy a bite to eat.

The other two islands in Greece that are ideal for year round holidays are Crete and Evia, the largest and second largest of all Greek islands. Evia is located right next to the mainland, and you can actually drive over to the island via the bridge that connects the mainland to the capital city of Chalkida.

Crete is located in the south of the Aegean and is a truly unique destination, filled with beautiful coastal resorts, mountainous villages and so much to see and experience, that you will need to come back again and again to really sample everything it has to offer.

All in all, which ever region of Greece you decide to visit, you can rest assured that there is nowhere else on earth that can offer you such a choice and diversity.
