Lefkada Island Holidays
The Ionian island of Lefkada is a very beautiful one, situated close to the region of Etolaokarnania on the west side of Central Greece. There is actually a small passage way that connects the island to the mainland.
Naturally beautiful with inspiring landscapes and stunning scenery, Lefkada is a very popular holiday island for both Greeks and visitors from abroad. Lefkada is the homeland of Agelos Sikelianos, who was a very famous author, and the famous poet Aristotle Valaoritis.
During the month of August, the island is flooded by people, comprising mainly of artists, who come to participate in the celebrations of "Literature and Art", which is an international folklore event that has taken place in Lefkada since 1960.
The capital town is that of Chora (Hora), with it's fortress of Agia Mavra, which dominates the landscape between the small channel connecting the island to the mainland. Chora is a very picturesque town, and one that has successfully maintained the traditions and elements of the old town.
There are many narrow streets where visitors can take an enjoyable walk. Over the past few years, Chora has extended it's size, with many new and modern buildings filling the charming landscape.
Amongst the small narrow streets of the town, visitors will find the museum of Lefkada where you can see a lovely selection of artifacts and interesting items on display.
Visitors can also pass by the lovely church of Agios Minas, which is situated in a charming square, which is also the commercial centre of the town. Here you can enjoy a meal or drink at one of the traditional tavernas and ouzeries.
Situated just a short distance of about 3km outside of the town is the charming monastery of "Faneromenis", which was built on a very beautiful and magical area. As well as being an important religious centre, it is also a very popular common walking area for the residents of Chora.
Using the town of Chora as a base for exploring the island, visitors can head southwards passing by the popular tourist resort of Nydri, and then onto the traditional village of Karya, which is one of the main villages on Lefkada.
This village is very beautiful and one with delightful traditional architecture and home to the unique "Karsanika" embroidery, which is handmade in this particular area of Lefkada.
Continuing along, visitors will reach two of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, those of "Kathisma" (Agios Nikitas) and Porto Katsiki, both of which are a marvel of natural beauty that leaves visitors in awe. During the summer months, these beaches are filled with people enjoying the beautiful waters and beaches.
The island of Lefkada is well organised to cater for tourism, and has a well developed infrastructure. Visitors to Lefkada will find a wonderful selection of accommodation including hotels, rooms, studios and apartments to let all over the island.
Lefkada has air connections via the airport at Aktio, as well as regular national bus services (KTEL) to Athens. There are also boat services that can take visitors to the neighbouring Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca.
