The county of Messinia in the Peloponnese region of Greece is the perfect combination of land and sea, where the blue and green colours blend together perfectly, creating a stunning landscape and a perfect place for your holidays and vacations throughout the year.
The county of Messinia is home to some beautiful areas such as the municipality of Kyparissia, which is located approximately 67km from Kalamata, the capital of Messinia. One of the towns located in Kyparissia is that of Rahes (Raches), a charming town, that is located a short distance away from the beautiful sandy beach.
The town of Rahes and the general area of Kyparissia is where nature thrives, and the traditional and natural setting make it a very peaceful and relaxing part of the Peloponnese. The area is rich in vegetation, and the agricultural industry plays an important role in the economy of the area.
As well as the beautiful beaches found here, there are also many other interesting sites that visitors can explore. The archaeological site of Peristeria is a very interesting place to visit and is considered one of the most important centres of the early Mycenaean civilization.
Excavations started here in the 1960s, and visitors today will see the 3 vaulted graves, inside which were found a beautiful collection of golden bowls and jewels, and also important vessels. There is also a very interesting gorge located close to the archaeological site, where you can see the cave with the stunning stalactites.
Another place worth visiting is the Holy Abbey of the Virgin Mary’s Genesio, which is known locally as Katsimikada. The abbey is located 9km North East from the city of Kyparissia and is at an altitude of 450 meters.
There are some very interesting artefacts that you can see at the Abbey including the silver chalices made in 1880 and 1885, and icons dating back to the 19th century. At the abbey, you can enjoy the stunning views that stretch out as far as the eye can see.
In the city of Kyparissia, you can see some very interesting sites including the “Arcadias Castle”. This castle is a highlight of the city, and from here you can experience some truly breathtaking views. The castle is also referred to as the “Giant’s Castle”, as mythology tells us that giants built Kyparissia, and with some of the rocks that form the castle being of such a huge size, it was believed that only giants could have built the impressive and dominating structure.
The Folklore Museum of Kyparissia is also well worth visiting, where you can see a variety of interesting exhibits. You can also take a walk through the “old town” of Kyparissia, along the winding cobblestone paths.
