Museum & Antiquities Guide to Athens

Visitors to Athens will find a huge selection of fascinating museums which they can visit. From the famous National Archaeological Museum and the famous Acropolis Museum, to some of the smaller less known ones, each is a great place to visit and learn about the history of Greece as well as other cultures from around the world.

Acropolis Museum

Overview: The New Acropolis Museums is one of the most unique and popular in Athens and opened in 2009. On display you will find a huge selection of artifacts and treasures that had been stored away, due to the lack of space in the old Acropolis Museum, which was situated on the top of the Acropolis next to the Parthenon.

Location: The New Acropolis Museum is located at 15 Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, a minutes walk from the Metro station of Akropolis.

Benaki Museum

Overview: The Benaki Museum holds a number of permanent collections, as well as organizing a variety of interesting exhibitions, usually exhibits of contemporary art.

Location: The Benaki Museum is located at 1 Koumbari St. & Vas. Sofias Ave, and is a short distance from the Metro stations of Syntagma and Evangelismos.

Byzantine Museum

Overview: The Byzantine and Christian Museum is one with a history stretching back to the mid 1800s. The musuem exhibits a range of Byzantine and Christian artifacts from the 3rd century AD through to the modern day.

Location: The Byzantine Museum is located at 22 Vas.Sofias Avenue, and is just a short distance away from Syntagma Square, which can be reached by Metro, Tram and Bus.

Children's Museum

Overview: The aim of the Children's Museum, one of 300 in the world, is to intrigue children and to teach them through an interactive method.

Location: The Children's Museum is located at 14 Kidathinaion Street in Plaka, a short distance from the Metro station of Monastiraki.

Cycladic Art Museum

Overview: The Cycladic Art Museum is located in two neighbouring buildings, and is home to an impressive collection of Cycladic art and exhibits. There is also a section of the musem that hosts temporary exhibits.

Folk Musical Instruments Museum

Overview: The Museum of Folk Musical Instruments is home to a collection of the instruments belonged to Fivos Anogarakis, who donated to the Greek state.

Greek Folk Art Museum

Overview: The Museum of Greek Folk Art is located in the mosque is at the Monastiraki square, and houses a collection of 800 vases and other clay objects from the 20th century.

Location: The Greek Folk Art Museum is located at 1 Areos Street, and is directly oppostite the Metro station of Monastiraki.

Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum

Overview: The Ilias lalaounis Jewelry Museum in the Acropolis district of Athens is home to a permanent collection of jewelry designed by it's founder from 1940 until 2000.

Islamic Art Museum

Overview: The Islamic Art Museum, founded by the Benaki institute, is home to the private collection of Antonis Benakis - collected when he was living in Egypt.

Jewish Museum of Greece

Overview: Founded in 1977, the Jewish Museum collects and exhibits artifacts related to the presence of Jews in Greece.

Keramikos Museum

Overview: The museum of Keramikos is situated in the archaeological site of Keramikos, and houses a number of important artifacts and findings from the Keramikos Archaeological site.

National Archaeological Museum

Overview: The National Archaeological Museum is the largest museum in Athens and one of the most important in the world. The museum is home to a huge range of exhibits that cover a large chronological and geographical span providing artifacts and findings from many different periods of Greek history, from all over Greece.

Location: The National Archaeological Museum is located at 44 Patission Street, and is just a short distance away from the Metro stations of Omonia and Victoria.

National History Museum

Overview: Since 1960 the National Historic Museum has been located in the old Parliament building of Athens, and houses a wide range of exhibits from the Post-Byzantine years through to the Greek - Italian war of 1940-1941.

Numismatic Museum

Overview: The Numismatic Museum is in the house of Heinrich Schliemann, the famous archaeologist. The museum is one of great beauty and inside you can see a variety of exhibits including the private coin collection of Schliemann.

Railway Museum

Overview: The Railway Museum of Athens is home to a large a collection of items related to the history of rail transportation in Greece.

Overview: The War Museum exhibits a large selection of war machinery and weapons, dating from the prehistoric times through to the 20th century.
